Send and receive chat messages in Hangouts Meet

Sharing written communication is a critical part of successful meetings. Meeting participants may want to share links, chime in when they can’t speak, or hold side conversations without interrupting. This chat functionality has been a top feature request in Meet since we launched earlier this year and that’s why, today, we’re bringing it to all G Suite users.

Going forward, meeting attendees will be able to send text and links, all in real time. The chat history will be available for the duration of the meeting.

This feature is available across Meet platforms: chat messages can be sent and received on web and mobile (versions 4.5 and above), and received on Chromebox for Meetings. All users can send and receive messages while in Meet, including those not signed in with Google accounts.

Streamlining group chat creation in Google Hangouts on the web

Last year, we launched the ability to create and share short links to Hangouts group chats. This allows your team to opt-in to a chat, rather than having to invite people one by one. Today, we’re streamlining how you create group chats to make it easier to create group chats for projects or teams. In the improved flow, you can now name your group chats more easily when you are creating a group chat. Once the group chat has a name, this allows you to create “placeholder” group chats which you can then share with a link.

These improvements will be in available all three Hangouts user interfaces on the web. In Hangouts in Gmail, a “+” button will be available next to your contacts list in Hangouts. In hangouts.google.com and in the Chrome extension, you’ll see a “New conversation” option. By clicking “New group” or “New conversation” you can name the group, start adding members, or both.

Full-view screen sharing for Google Hangouts

For a richer experience when presenting screen-shared content, today we’re launching full-view screen sharing for Google Hangouts.

Moving forward, when people using Hangouts present to meeting participants in ‘Present to everyone’ mode─or another participant pins someone who is screen-sharing─Hangouts participants will see two changes to the user interface:

  • The screen shared content will use as much visible area of the screen as possible. The thumbnail photos of meeting attendees will overlay the content at the bottom of the screen by default.
  • A new button will be added to the control bar at the top to allow participants to hide the thumbnail photos of meeting attendees as desired.

“Last seen” indication in Hangouts

To make it easier to know when people using Hangouts are available to chat, we’ve added timestamps as part of status (e.g. ‘last seen 2h ago’), indicating when one was last using Hangouts.

Individuals can control whether this info is shared from Hangouts chat settings.

This feature is now available on Hangouts in Gmail (gradual rollout), as well as on the latest versions of the Hangouts Android and iOS apps.

New Hangouts Chrome app

-Comprompt-google-hangouts

A new Hangouts Chrome app was launched today with an updated UI. The app is available for Windows and Chrome OS platforms and brings the best of Hangouts to your desktop.

Improvements include:

  • Streamlined design that keeps your chats accessible without getting in the way of everything else. Your contact list and all your chats are condensed into one easy to toggle window.
  • Works outside of your browser so your chats are always available, not tucked away inside a window. You’ll get all your messages as long as you have the app running, and your chats will sync across Hangouts on all your devices.
  • Includes all the video and voice features you’re used to in Hangouts. We recently announced you can make phone calls to any number in the world (via Hangouts dialer) and now you can do this right from your desktop.
